Dear Spencer Families,

As we continue to build on the great work happening at Spencer, our 2026-27 School Growth Plan focuses on three key priorities: strengthening students’ sense of belonging and connection, improving reading comprehension across all subject areas, and building strong number sense and confidence in mathematics. These goals reflect the voices of our students, staff, and community and are designed to support the success of every learner at Spencer Middle School.

A strong sense of belonging remains the foundation of learning. Through inclusive practices, meaningful relationships, engaging learning opportunities, and a focus on attendance, we want every student to feel connected and valued. At the same time, we will continue to support literacy and numeracy development through evidence-based teaching practices and targeted supports.

Next week, families will receive a short survey inviting feedback on our school goals and priorities. We encourage all parents and caregivers to participate. Your input will help start an important conversation and ensure our work continues to reflect the needs and aspirations of our school community. Together, we can make Spencer an even stronger place for learning, belonging, and growth.

Sincerely,

Carly Hunter

  • Halloween Costume Expectations. Halloween can be a fun and exciting time for many of our students. To ensure that celebrations at school are safe and enjoyable for everyone, we kindly ask for your support in helping children follow the District’s guidelines for costumes on Friday, October 30.

While the District does not have an official Halloween policy, we ask all families to follow these guidelines to create a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment:

Students must be identifiable and visible at all times.

    • Masks are not permitted. Face makeup is allowed as long as the student remains easily recognizable.
    • Scary clown costumes are not permitted.
    • Costumes that depict violence, alcohol, or drugs are not appropriate.
    • Fake weapons of any kind are not allowed.
    • Costumes should be appropriate for the school environment and must not include provocative elements or questionable props.
    • Costumes must allow students to move safely through the school and outdoor spaces.

Please keep in mind that even well-intended costumes can sometimes cause others to feel scared, upset, or excluded. Two guiding questions may help when choosing a costume:

  • Does the costume depict or perpetuate a stereotype or stigma associated with a particular race, culture, religion, or gender?
  • Could the costume be considered offensive to a particular race, ethnicity, religion, or gender?

We encourage students to choose costumes that are creative, fun, and celebrate imagination while ensuring that everyone feels safe and respected. Thank you for helping us make this Halloween a positive and inclusive experience for all students.

  • China Trip - Spring Break 2028. Spencer Middle School is excited to offer a unique educational travel opportunity to visit China during Spring Break 2028. We are holding an information evening on Tuesday, October 27 at 6pm in Spencer Middle School library. At the meeting, we will discuss the exciting itinerary, what to expect on tour, safety on tour, pricing including an early sign up bonus, fundraising opportunities, and how to sign up.

All current grade 6, 7 and 8 Spencer students are eligible to enrol provided they have a recommendation from their teacher/principal. Students who will be at Belmont next year are still able to enrol for the tour and take part in fundraising opportunities.
