Parent/Caregiver Opportunity – Sept. 15: Helping Your Child Navigate the Digital World Safely

Social media, smartphones, group chats, gaming, location sharing and artificial intelligence are part of everyday life for many young people. While technology provides opportunities to learn, connect and create, it can also present situations that children and youth may not be prepared to navigate on their own.

Parents, caregivers and grandparents are encouraged to participate in Establishing Safe, Caring, & Respectful Digital Communities, a free 60-minute family session presented by Safer Schools Together. Youth aged 10 and older are encouraged to attend with their families.

The session is designed to help families better understand the digital environments young people are navigating and provide practical information to support conversations about safe, caring and responsible technology use at home and in the community.

What families will learn

Topics covered during the session include:

  • Healthy digital media habits, oversharing and digital addiction
  • The permanence of online posts and activity
  • The impact of a young person’s “digital tattoo” and how online activity can influence how they are perceived by others, including sports teams, post-secondary institutions and future employers
  • The importance of caring for and supporting peers both online and offline
  • Geo-location settings and risks associated with social media and cellphone use
  • The social and legal consequences of cyberbullying
  • Sexting, sextortion, and the possession and distribution of intimate images
  • How young people can report concerns and access help and support
  • An anonymous student reporting tool that can help students and their peers stay safe online and offline

The digital landscape is changing quickly, and it can be difficult for families to keep up with new platforms, technologies and online risks.

You don't need to be a technology expert to help your child navigate the digital world. Being informed and part of the conversation is an important place to start.

Families are encouraged to attend together and use the session as an opportunity to continue conversations at home about responsible technology use, online relationships, personal safety and where to turn when something goes wrong.
