Literacy Savory

We are committed to helping each student progress with their literacy skills – reading, writing, and speaking (see our Literacy Goal in last week’s newsletter/email). Every teacher ensures that there is literacy instruction every day to help each kiddo build their skills. Also, we have our Literacy Support and Learning Support Teacher, Ms. Matthews, who works diligently with individual students and small groups providing daily intervention support. Our staff are also engaged in professional development and collaboration in teams with our District Curriculum Coordinator for Literacy.

As you know, your role is also critical in helping your children with their literacy learning. The BC Ministry of Education and Childcare has provided some good information for parents. Please see the link below. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this.

Victoria Literacy Connection

We are thrilled that volunteers from Victoria Literacy Connection will be coming to Savory again this year to read with some of our students. This dedicated group comes three times a week for 8 weeks – 3 times a year and reads with children here at Savory. This is the fourth year of collaboration with Victoria Literacy Connection. It as a beautiful partnership! The volunteers loved to come read with our kiddos and our students very much enjoyed their reading time. Victoria Literacy Connection is always looking for volunteers and so if you or someone you know might be interested, please see information here https://victorialiteracyconnection.ca/. The website also provides more information about this terrific organization.

Savory Elementary School Reporting Plan

Introduction

Effective July 1, 2023, the K-12 Reporting Policy has come into effect and the way your students learning is shared with you is changing.

During the school year you will receive 5 learning updates for your child. This will include 2 informal learning updates, 2 formal written learning updates, and 1 summary of learning at the end of the school year.

Informal Updates (2 per year)

Informal Learning updates include information specific to the student’s learning and encourage dialogue on ways to support. Parents/caregivers are partners in the dialogue about the student’s learning and the best ways to support growth.

Informal Learning updates help parents and caregivers:

  • increase their understanding of learning and assessment in the classroom.
  • heighten their awareness of their child’s abilities.
  • learn about ways in which they can support their child’s growth and learning.
  • be actively involved in the communication of student learning process.

Informal Learning Updates may take the forms of:

  • In-person or virtual conferences
  • Phone calls
  • Emails
  • Portfolios
  • Written summaries

Your child’s teachers will be sharing with you and your child their reporting plan including the informal update format they feel will work best for communicating with you.

As always, should you wish to request a meeting or conference you can do so by contacting your child’s teacher and scheduling a time that works best for all based on availability. We will have informal reporting conferences on November 26 after the early dismissal at 11:38 am. More information will be forthcoming.

Formal Written Updates (2 per year)

Written learning updates, that could look like report cards, will be provided twice during the school year.

  • Proficiency scale combined with descriptive feedback in all areas of learning in which the student is currently studying, in relation to the Learning Standards, including feedback on any Supplemental Goals outlined in an IEP (if your student has one).
  • Individualized, strength-based, with easy-to-understand language for parents and caregivers.
  • Highlighted personalized areas of student growth and further development in relation to the Learning Standards and supplementary goals, if any.
  • Student attendance from MyEducation BC – autogenerated numbers on the report are sufficient.
  • Student self-reflection of the Core Competencies and goal setting.

Savory Formal Written Updates/Report Cards will be published and available in MyEd Parent Portal on December 18 and March 12.

Summary of Learning (End of Year)

The Summary of Learning is the end of year report that is distributed by the last day of the school year. Summaries of learning will include:

  • Proficiency scale combined with descriptive feedback in all areas of learning in which the student is currently studying, in relation to the Learning Standards, including feedback on any Supplemental Goals outlined in an IEP (if your student has one);
  • Individualized, strength-based, with easy-to-understand language for parents and caregivers.
  • Highlighted personalized areas of student growth and further development in relation to the Learning Standards and supplementary goals, if any.
  • Student attendance from MyEducation BC.
  • Information on where to find student self-reflection of the Core Competencies and goal setting.
  • Additional information can be found here: K-12 Student Reporting Information | Sooke School District (sd62.bc.ca)

Savory Final Summary of Learning (Report Card) will be available June 29.

Halloween – Halloween Dance (Oct. 15) – Halloween @ Savory (Oct. 30)

Halloween can be a fun and exciting time for many of our students. To ensure that celebrations at school are safe and enjoyable for everyone, we kindly ask for your support in helping children follow the district’s guidelines for costumes on Friday, October 30, and any other Halloween school events/PAC events.

While the District does not have an official Halloween policy, we ask all families to follow these guidelines to create a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment:

· Students must always be identifiable and visible.

· Masks are not permitted. Face makeup is allowed if the student remains easily recognizable.

· Scary clown costumes are not permitted.

· Costumes that depict violence, alcohol, or drugs are not appropriate.

· Fake weapons of any kind are not allowed.

· Costumes should be appropriate for the school environment and must not include provocative elements or questionable props.

· Costumes must allow students to move safely through the school and outdoor spaces.

Please keep in mind that even well-intended costumes can sometimes cause others to feel scared, upset, or excluded. Two guiding questions may help when choosing a costume:

· Does the costume depict or perpetuate a stereotype or stigma associated with a particular race, culture, religion, or gender?

· Could the costume be considered offensive to a particular race, ethnicity, religion, or gender?

We encourage students to choose costumes that are creative, fun, and celebrate imagination while ensuring that everyone feels safe and respected. Thank you for helping us make this Halloween a positive and inclusive experience for all students.
