Info for Families: October 15
Thursday, October 15, 2026
Hello Savory Families,
Free Family Food Market – tomorrow at 2:30pm (bring your own bags please).
Halloween – PAC Halloween Dance (today 5-7pm) – Halloween @ Savory (Oct. 30)
Halloween can be a fun and exciting time for many of our students. To ensure that celebrations at school are safe and enjoyable for everyone, we kindly ask for your support in helping children follow the district’s guidelines for costumes on Friday, October 30, and any other Halloween school events/PAC events.
While the District does not have an official Halloween policy, we ask all families to follow these guidelines to create a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment:
- Students must always be identifiable and visible.
- Masks are not permitted. Face makeup is allowed if the student remains easily recognizable.
- Scary clown costumes are not permitted.
- Costumes that depict violence, alcohol, or drugs are not appropriate.
- Fake weapons of any kind are not allowed.
- Costumes should be appropriate for the school environment and must not include provocative elements or questionable props.
- Costumes must allow students to move safely through the school and outdoor spaces.
Please keep in mind that even well-intended costumes can sometimes cause others to feel scared, upset, or excluded. Two guiding questions may help when choosing a costume:
- Does the costume depict or perpetuate a stereotype or stigma associated with a particular race, culture, religion, or gender?
- Could the costume be considered offensive to a particular race, ethnicity, religion, or gender?
We encourage students to choose costumes that are creative, fun, and celebrate imagination while ensuring that everyone feels safe and respected. Thank you for helping us make this Halloween a positive and inclusive experience for all students.
Haunted House – Oct. 26 & 27 (5-7pm)
This is the second year for the Savory Haunted House. Mr. Vargas will transform our gymnasium for 2 evenings at Haunted House. The Haunted House will be open from 5-7pm. Entry is by donation, and all funds go towards the Gr. 5 year-end field trip. The Haunted House is open to the public. Children must be accompanied by parents/family members.
Let’s Get Visible Day – Friday, Nov. 6
We will be joining schools across Greater Victoria on Friday, November 6, to celebrate Let’s Get Visible Day! Students are encouraged to wear their brightest, most colourful, sparkly, reflective, or light-up outdoor clothing! As the mornings get darker, this fun day reminds us of the importance of being visible and staying safe while walking, biking, or travelling to school. Please note: Any light-up clothing must be turned off while students are inside the school. If your child plans to wear light-up clothing, please remind them of this ahead of time. We look forward to seeing everyone shine bright!

BC Ministry of Education – Pathway to Proficiency
The Ministry of Education and Childcare has created one-page documents outlining the curriculum for English Language Arts, Mathematics and French Immersion. These are good resources for families to help understand what your children will be learning and what proficiency will look like for these curricular areas. Please have a look when you have some time.

Early Learning Literacy Screening Brochure for Parents and Caregivers
During September and early October, your children will have completed literacy screening assessments that help teachers understand where your children are and then help teachers to plan for literacy instruction. These screeners are mandatory for kindergarten to grade 3. Please have a look at the brochure attached that provides more information about these. Thank you for taking the time to read this. If you have questions, please contact your child’s teacher.
SD 62 Parent Handbook
One more terrific resource for parents is the newly created SD 62 Parent Handbook. Please have a look. Click here.
Note: We will be putting this on our school website under the parent tab.

Coast Salish Moon – Oct. 10

CENQOLEW – THE DOG SALMON RETURN TO EARTH Oct. 10
The Dog Salmon return to the Earth Moon at this time. The colours are Dog Salmon (ochre red). The men are returning the bones of the salmon to the sea, with thanks, in the belief that the bones will come to life and replenish the salmon stocks. The man raises his oar to show honour and respect to our relative, the salmon, who helps us survive.
CONNECTIONS AND BACKGROUND INFORMATION - September derives its name from the Latin word ‘septem’, meaning seven. This was the seventh month in the Roman calendar when the year began in March. This moon marks the arrival of the Dog Salmon.
WEATHER -The rainy weather continues and the winds have become unpredictable. The creeks and rivers rise enough for the Dog Salmon to spawn.
