Info for families: October 1

Thursday, October 1, 2026

Hello Savory Families,

Free Family Food Market – tomorrow at 2:30pm (bring your own bags please).

We are one month into the school year, and September has flown by! It has been a terrific month of students getting settled and back into their classroom and school routines. I really appreciate the efforts that you as families made to help this month be a good one for all of us. And a huge thank you to our PAC executive and their friends and family members who planned and executed a fantastic welcome back BBQ rainy weather and all!

This past month, Savory teachers have been assessing reading with the assistance of Ms. Matthews, Literacy and Learning Support teacher. Reading instruction in classes have been informed with these assessments and teachers continue to plan for the year ahead.

Students have also been engaged in a variety of writing learning experiences. And we have our fall schoolwide write next week. The fall write will be on the topic “My perfect day…”. All students from kindergarten to grade 5 will be writing and then teachers will be assessing their writing. This assessment helps teachers to plan for instruction for fall and winter. We do this school-wide write three times a year and collect data to see how our students are doing. Schoolwide writes also help us measure our progress towards our literacy goal in the Savory School Growth Plan.

School Goals for 2026-2027

Every school in our district has a school growth plan that aligns with our school district’s strategic plan. The fulsome plan will be on our website very soon. In the meantime, here is our literacy goal.

  1. Strengthen foundational literacy skills by using collected data to drive instructional practices in Reading and Writing.
    1. Continue to ensure all K-2 students receive evidence-based phonics instruction.
    2. Continue to strengthen reading comprehension and fluency for students in grades 2-5.
    3. Support students in planning and creating texts for different purposes and audiences.
    4. Provide opportunities for students to create stories and other texts that deepen their awareness of self, family, and community.

Terry Fox Run

We had our Terry Fox Run on Monday afternoon, and it was fantastic to see our young students running around our school and down the E&N trail. Thank you to those who sent in a toonie for a donation to the Terry Fox Foundation. We raised around $200 this year. At our assembly last week, we learned about Terry as an everyday person who became a Canadian hero through is courageous and inspirational Marathon of Hope. His legacy lives on and is strong across Canada and around the world.

Cross Country

Cross Country permission forms are due today for the run on October 8 at Juan de Fuca Centre.

Parents are responsible for transporting students to and from the event.

Fall Weather

With the rainy season upon us, please ensure that children have boots, raincoats, umbrellas etc. A change of clothing for younger students is also needed (K-3).
